Smart and Smarter Goals – A Smart Goal Breakdown +Free Cheatsheet

Mark Murphy the author of “Hard Goals” “hates” them. Brain Tracy likes them. But what are SMART Goals? Can they help you finally achieve your goals? Or are they just another hyped management tool?

In our smart goal breakdown we’ll take a look at where they came from, how to make smart goals work for you and when it’s useful to set smart goals. And did you know there are even SMARTER Goals now? What’s up with that? This and more will be covered in the following post.

What are Smart and Smarter Goals – A Smart Goal Definition

The first time I ever encountered the acronym SMART was at university. when professors tried to teach us about the benefits of SMART Goal Setting for our studies.

So. what does SMART Goals Mean? There are multiple explanations to what the acronym SMART can stand for. Here is the most common one:

S          = Specific (where, who, what)

M        = Measurable (how many/much)

A         = Achievable/Attainable (possible?)

R         = Relevant (why, how does it help?)

T          = Timebound (when)

Later on, authors added additional elements, such as SMARTER2:

E          = Evaluated (evaluation of the progress – where in the action                     plan are you?)

R         = Reviewed/Rewarded (lessons learned, feedback, reward)

The Origins of SMART Goals

I did a lot of research on where the term SMART Goals originated from for the smart goal breakdown. The truth is I didn’t find any conclusive evidence as to who really invented the term.

There seems to be a general consensus that the term was firstly used in the article “There’s a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management’s Goals and Objectives” published in 1981 in Spokane, Washington by George T. Doran, a consultant and former Director of Corporate Planning for Washington Water Power Company.1

In the article Doran explains how to write meaningful objectives:

“ […] when it comes to writing effective objectives, corporate officers, managers, and supervisors just have to think of the acronym SMART (p.36).”1

Doran’s original definition consisted of the following 5 elements:

Specific:                    target a specific area for improvement.

Measurable:            quantify, or at least suggest, an indicator of

        progress.

Assignable:              specify who will do it.

Realistic:                  state what results can realistically be achieved

       given available resources.

Time-related:         specify when the result can be achieved.

(Doran, 1981,p.36)

While these days it is believed that a SMART goal should include all 5 elements Doran explicitly explained that the suggested acronym doesn’t mean that every objective written will need all five criteria. Keeping it much more flexible.

How, Why, and When you Should Use SMART GOAL SETTING

How to SET, TRACK, and HIT your SMART GOALS - A SMART GOAL BREAKDOWN

“Only Action Creates Results. Words Are Cheap.“

Set Your Goal

  • Be as specific as possible. A common mistake is often that people are too unspecific. Read the examples again to check whether your goal is specific enough!
  • When making your goal measurable you have to find the right key performance indicator. A key performance indicator is a number that measures your performance.
  • Let us say you want to lose weight. Maybe the scale alone isn’t the right way to measure goal achievement, since you will also gain muscle mass. Figure out your Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). When exactly is your goal achieved and how can you measure that? Need help finding your right indicator? Send us a message with the goal you try to achieve.
  • Is the goal achievable within the given time? You can still shoot for the stars, but you shouldn’t be discouraged, when you only hit a mountain. When you start with smaller goals, and you hit them you’ll get loads of motivation. Next increase the difficulty level. My personal experience is that when the goals are too big, I get discouraged or overwhelmed.
  • Make sure your goal is relevant. Does it support your long-term goals? I had the habit of studying everything when I was a student. Instead of focusing on exercising and focusing on the most relevant parts I would get lost in the details. Was that efficient? Sometimes we do stuff for the sake of doing something. Make sure to set relevant goals. The 80/ 20 Rule can help you with that.
  • Keep to the schedule!
  • Don’t be too harsh on yourself. Keep it flexible. That’s what the evaluation process is for.

Action Plan

We’ll explain action plans in more detail at a later point. But the most important steps are:

  1. Create a Before and After. (What’s the current situation – Where do you want to be?)
  2. Create Milestones (How did others get there?)
  3. Break Them Apart into Small Achievable Tasks
  4. Organize them into your Calendar
  5. Stick to it.

It doesn’t matter how awesome the action plan is. In the end whether you stick to it depends on your grit! Sometimes you just have to do stuff even thought it is hard. With determination, persistence, focus, stubbornness and discipline.

“Everything is hard before it is easy.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Emotional Management can help you with that! As does creating routines and habits.

Track and Evaluate the Progress

In order to figure out whether your Action Plan works you have to track the progress and evaluate your results.

  • Are your Action Steps getting you where you want to be?
  • Are you within your given Timeline?

You can track that with weekly, monthly yearly with Progress Reports.

The Criticism

Critics often mention the following negative aspects of SMART Goals:

  1. Inflexible: SMART Goals lack flexibility and therefore don’t work as well for long term goals that might change over time.
  2. Demotivating: Due to their strict character, smart goals don’t cause excitement instead demotivating.
  3. Stifles Creativity: As you have to follow certain steps and achieve a rigid goal there isn’t a lot of room for flexibility

When and when not to use SMART GOALS – Our Experience

So last but not least I’d like to give you a little review on our experience with SMART Goals in the form of a short Q and A:

Q: Do we think smart goals are useful?

A: Yes and no. They are great for short-term goals, but they are too inflexible to achieve our dreams. Their inflexible structure stifles motivation in the long term they don’t leave enough room for experimentation and fun.

Q: When would we recommend smart goals?

A: With simple manual tasks that don’t need creativity. Like preparing 10 packages for transport within 1 hour. For quantity goals, they are the best!  And when you are a numbers person.

Q: Why do smart goals fail?

A:

  1. When we set our goals to high.
  2. When we aren’t really into the goal.
  3. Too many goals at once.
  4. When our action steps are too difficult to achieve.

The most important part is that you set goals and that you work towards them. Create your own goal achievement system that works for you and get started.

How do Successful Women set Goals – Revealed

University teaches us how to set SMART Goals. Fairly sure 99% of you have heard about that method. Goals should be:

specific
M measurable
A attainable
R realistic
T time-based

But how do successful people actually set goals? We’ll take a look:

Sara Blakely - Visualization

Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx swears by this method. When she was still selling fax machines, she envisioned herself being self-employed, selling a product to a lot of people and creating a business, which would fund itself even when she was not around. She said, you have to imagine every little detail.

In Her Book Self-Intelligence Jane Ransom Describes A Visualization Experiment:

Conducted in 1989 in this experiment college students were divided into three teams

  • The students got tested on their dart-throwing abilities before and after an eight-week study. The first group, the control group, didn’t practice and didn’t visualize throwing darts. Their throwing abilities did not improve.
  • The second group physically practiced daily for 8 weeks.
  • And the third group altered between physically and mentally (visualization) practicing throwing darts. The third group improved the most!

“When you visualize you have to imagine all the body sensations”, Jane Ransom suggests. I found 2 simple visualization exercises:

1.1. Create a vision board.

A vision board does just what it says. It displays what you want and what your dreams are. Typically, it is a poster, or a cork board and you stick pictures and sentences of your dreams onto the board. Every time you look at it you get reminded of where you want to be.

1.2. Try this simple visualization technique

  1. Find a place where you are comfortable, and you can relax.
  2. Decide where you want to be or what you want to practice.
  3. Set the scene. Where are you? Who is there? What does the place look like? What are you doing? What are you feeling? Which sensations do you feel? What do you hear? What do you smell? Imagine the scene as vividly as possible.
  4. Now practice the action you want to perform.
  5. Imagine how you succeed in the action and how it makes you feel. Proud? Delighted? Happy?

Oprah - Manifestation & Skill Up

Oprah believes in Manifestation. Here  is how it works:

1. You have to want something.

2. You have to imagine how your life is like when you have it.

3. You have to believe it’ll happen.

4. Then let it go and move in the direction of working toward it.

Skill Up

She recommends to become so amazing at something that your talent and skill can’t be dismissed and do not compare yourself to others. Here is a post on how to achieve your goals on Oprah.com.

Heidi Grant Halvorso - Decide when and where you will take action

Heidi Grant Halvorson, author of Nine Things Successful People Do Differently recommends that you know exactly when and where you take action. Your brain will be prepared to take action. Plan and schedule your action

steps. According to studies it increases your chances of success by up to 300%.

Lisa Nichols - Chunk Big Goals into Smaller Goals

Lisa Nichols cuts down big goals into smaller 90-day goals. You should be able to measure your actions, goals and milestones.

Write Your Goals Down

A study by psychology professor Dr. Gail Matthews confirms the assumption that writing goals down makes them more achievable. She did a study on 267 people. She separated them into 5 groups and each group had to think about their goals. People who wrote down their goals were more likely to achieve them. People from group 5, which had a whooping 76% success rate wrote down their goals, created actionable steps, held themselves accountable through friends and created a weekly progress report.

Write down your goal along with us daily. Post it down in the comments if you want or message us we will ask you in a few days if you are still on track!  Or share it with us on Pinterest. Create an action plan for your next 10 steps and create a progress report, which you will share with a friend or family member.  (PS.: Don’t share it with a negative person. 10 Unique Reddit Q&As on How To Effectively Set Goals

Okay, the headline is not 100% accurate as I also researched questions on Quora. During my last post I wondered how you look at the goal setting process. How you usually scribble down goals – or if you even set goals at all. I am kinda surprised how many different questions popped up. Sadly a good amount was connected to negative experiences. After scrolling through both plattforms I categorized your questions into:

  • How and what is the best method to set goals?
  • How do you achieve your goals?
  • I don’t have goals
  • Why do I feel like I can’t finish my goals?

So lets get right into the first questions:

How and what is the best method to set goals?

There are many different goal setting methods to apply. The most applied and looked for is the SMART goal theory by George Doran, Arthur Miller and James Cunningham.

Check the full post on the SMART goal theory if you’ve missed it.

The Smart theory definitely explains  how to set goals that work. Nethertheless I’d like to add a second method I learned thanks to your questions:

The 54321 goal setting method:

This method is based on setting goals for a certain time period. What do you want to achieve the next:

  • 5 years
  • 4 months
  • 3 weeks
  • 2 days and
  • 1 hour?

Here is a Goal Setting Example for a  full-time blogger:

  • 5 years I am a full-time blogger travelling the world
  • 4 months I have a set income (even if its not enough for fulltime yet)
  • 3 weeks I have a thriving website with at least XXX traffic a month
  • 2 days I created my first 10 pieces of content, and set up social media accounts
  • 1 hour I buy a domain and set up my website

Noticed that I write in present tense?  Writing in present tense helps your brain sort the process in “its currently happening” and not in “I wish it would happen”. It is way more final. A solid message to yourself.

If you feel stuck, unsure of how to set goals, and what goals to set – you can use the different areas of goal setting explained in the following posts:

This is also a great way to break down goals into small feasible tasks. So what do you say? What’s the best way to set and attain goals?

How do You Achieve your Goals?

“I’ve set my goals, now what?” Thats probably what most goal setters wonder once they finish their goal sheet.

Have you ever set your New Years Resolution and somehow lost track of it just a few days later?

Working on your goals is hard, especially when you have a hundred million things you want to change!

Step One: Don’t put too much on your plate!

Pick one goal and only focus on that one goal. You want to workout every morning and read 20 minutes at night? Thats fine, thats doable!

You want to build a 1 million dollar business withing 365 days while completely improving all your bad habits, and wake up at 5 AM every single day? I think you can imagine how that will turn out. Being realistic is key. Don’t focus on too much at the beginning. Change one thing at a time.

No you are not missing out or get left behind by others

Starting slowly is still better that quitting your journey 2 weeks in because you put too much on your plate and can’t handle it. Actually most peoply won’t realize their goals – so if you accomplish just something small you are doing a great job!

Believe me. I always felt like I needed to achieve everything at the same time. Immediately. I was scared that others would have so much more accomplishments in the year that I pressured myself into overcommiting.

But its just not realistic. Change comes in small pieces, with time and patience.

Step Two: Don’t Fear Failure or Mistakes

My grandma always says “If someone works he’ll make mistakes, and if someone doesn’t work he won’t make mistakes”

So if you don’t make mistake you don’t work and if you don’t work you won’t grow or learn.

Make mistakes. Take responsibility. Be brave.

If you are scared think about what can go wrong. (Note: This doesn’t apply when you can get physically or mentally hurt!)

Step Three: Have Faith

It will get better. Maybe your results aren’t as good as expected and you tried your hardest. You put in all the extra hours – but got nothing out of it. Don’t give up – keep trying. Try new things, new perspectives, new software programs, new  designs, new content. Try try try. If you want something that other people don’t have (or try to compete with them) you need to believe in yourself and the process.

I always tell myself that everything has its point of time. If it didn’t happen yet, then the moment isn’t there. Have patience.

Now let’s see what people do if they don’t know how to effectively set goals:

Like the post 🙂 Help us out and share it <3

3 Reasons Why people set a New Year's goal and it only lasts for about a month

  • Set too many goals for a small time period
  • Want to have immediate change and results
  • Don’t follow up with actions
  • Have low self-esteem and compare themselves with others
  • Set the wrong goals
  • Are scared to make mistakes /embarass themselves in front of others

You probably wonder “Why is goal setting so hard?”. The hard part is that you need to make a decision – how do you want to live?

You need to take the risk to fail, to embarrass yourself – to take responsibility of your own actions. You need to motivate yourself to do better – constantly. Depending on your goals you need to work and hammer on your projects while others are out spending their saturday afternoons at the pool.

We don’t want to miss out on life. But we also want to realize our dreams.

Its hard to bring both together without falling back on old habits. Nor can we miss out on the lovely memories we make with our loved ones.

Goal setting and achieving isn’t easy. But it is worth it at the end. It is a life long journey of learning and growing – trying, failing, trying again and failing again.

But remember

“If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. It’s the hard that makes it great.” – Tom Hanks

Posts To Help You Pull Through When you Feel like Giving up:

I don’t have goals - what now?

Ever had to scribble down your goals in school and your brain just goes blank? It happens to all of us.

Maybe you need to figure out who you are in life- and who you want to be.

  • What do you like, what don’t you like?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • What makes you happy/sad?

You don’t need to aim for becoming a CEO to set goals. You can aim to join a book club or to simply eat one chocolate bar less a day. You can focus on the things you like and note down to visit your favorite places more often – or make the effort to call up your parents once in a while.

Here are some Self discovery posts that will help you with your goal Setting:

Why do I feel like I can't finish my goals?

This question intrigued me for several reasons – I’ve been there. I’ve been there many times. I scribbled all my goals down. Dreamed about them. And deep down I somehow new I would never reach them. It was sad really. Now looking back I had following habits that fueled my discouragement:

  1. I set goals year by year but I quit everytime (by the end of January)
  2. I set my goals way too high
  3. I always started too empheurically into the new year and drained myself with overcommiting
  4. I had low self-confidence
  5. I stopped when I had to step out of my comfort zone

Today I know that I started the year with the wrong mindset:

“If I can’t accomplish it – then why do I even try?”

I didn’t care about the progress, the obstacles I would face and grow by.  I didn’t care about the journey I would go on. I only cared about the outcome.

So when I stood infront of the first hindrance, I stopped and turned around. I gave up because I wasn’t mentally prepared to simply jump over it.

Lesson Learned:

If you don’t like the journey, you will not make it to your destination. Focus on the road, the scenary, the people you meet. Don’t waste your time thinking “what will happen once I get there”. Live in the present.

Have you ever been in the same situation? Why did you quit your goals? What were the reasons?

What are 3 common mistakes people often make when setting goals?

  • They don’t learn from mistakes
  • They are influenced by others
  • They don’t track their progress  (MindTools)

Summary on how to effectively set goals:

  • Use a proven method to aim your goals (SMART or 54321 method)
  • Don’t plan too many goals (or too complex ones)
  • Be realistic
  • Analyze your resources and skills in advance
  • Break down goals in small time frames (weekly/monthly goals)
  • Note down immediate actions you can take

New Years Resolution 2023 – How to Stick to your Goals

Do you struggle with your new year’s resolution? Have you achieved your goals last year? Or did you give up halway through?

Sadly when a new year starts the alarm clock doesn’t suddenly turn into your best pal. Pizza doesn’t suddenly look any less yummy. And work doesn’t spontaneously turn into a piece of cake.

Thoughts will creep in. I am tired I can work on my side hustle tomorrow. A piece of chocolate would be really comforting right now… Do my goals really matter?

Now the biggest question you probably struggle with is: How do I make myself stick to my plans? Where do I get the willpower and self-discipline to not sleep in on a Saturday morning? I really don’t feel it. How can I get myself to work out.

Text: How to stcik to your goals Picture Woman typing on laptop, coffee

Let’s jump right in: How to stick to your goals:

  • Set realistic goals and start small
  • No skipping, no excuses
  • Find partners in crime
  • Don’t question yourself or your goals
  • Enjoy what you are doing
  • Figure out what triggers your motivation

Set realistic goals:

Your goals need to be achievable. Its very unlikely that you will be a millionaire in a year. The same goes for when you write down too many goals at once. (Speaking from experience, I always wrote down too many new year resolutions and already I felt so burned out after a week that I gave up.) Check out The 12 Week Year Method and SMART goals to set up your goals for success and increase your productivity during the journey.

Read the complete guide of goal setting here

Start small. Imagine you play a racing game and each time you finish a small goal you’ll get a speed up. The more tiny goals you achieve, the faster you get. You’ll get momentum. With each small goal you achieve you’ll get more motivated. Keep it going do a little each day or it’ll be so much more difficult to start new without the momentum carrying you.

The trap of “I don’t feel like it” - Why skipping will make you quit

What if i feel sick? What if work is so busy I can’t find the time? What if the bus is delayed and I get home too late today?

There are a thousand excuses we give ourselves. If we start skipping one day it’s fine right?  It’s just 24 hours, right? But 24 hours will turn into 2 days,  into a week, and suddenly you are following your old patterns once again. Worst of all you know you are giving yourself excuses and you’ll feel guilty as hell.

Time is not found, Time is made.

30 minutes a day doesn’t seem like much. But with 30minutes a day you can create and sell your first product, you can publish a book,  and you can build the essential skills to get that promotion.

Sometime you “just have to do it” like Nike would say. You’ll build your self-discipline and stop your habit of procrastination. Sticking to your plans will get easier over time.

Find partners in crime

Tasks are always more interesting when you do them in a team. Especially when the team members share the same goals and interests.

Just think about it: Your goal is to start a youtube channel in 2022 and increase the traffic of your website. Joining a discord group, or looking for YouTubers in the same category, can help you gain more knowledge from people who are ahead of you.

You can find collaborations that will push your channel forward. Or you can share problems and struggles and get feedback from people who live or lived through the exact same circumstances.

There are thousands of discord and Facebook groups online and with a bit of Googling you will also find a private WhatsApp group you fit in.

Don't question yourself and your goals

There will always be bad days, where you worked your butt off but you couldn’t get everything done. Or when you pushed through weeks and weeks but the estimated results just don’t kick in. Don’t question yourself and don’t question your goals.

Instead ask yourself: Why doesn’t it work out?  Why do I not achieve my goals? Are my action steps getting me where I want to go? Did I procrastinate to much at the beginning of the week? Or did I just estimate the time wrong for this project? Why is nobody looking at my work? How can I make it more interesting for my customers? Are there certain skills I need to improve to do better?

Remember: Life is a journey.

It’s useless to beat yourself up for not “being enough”, “doing enough”, or having no or bad results. Stay confident and see it as a challenge to overcome. Grow from it. Learn from it.

Enjoy what you are doing

You need to enjoy what you are doing, otherwise, it will get hard to stick with it day by day. And believe me, 365 days can be a long time. Look at your goal and look at the path you set for yourself – are you burning to do it every day until you hit your goal? Is there a better way to achieve it?

Figure out what triggers your motivation

How can I motivate myself to achieve my goals?

Even when you love the journey, there will be days you want to hold onto your blanket and stay in bed. Or you sit in front of your notebook, but the document stays empty. You need a good motivation boost asap.

And as we all know, motivation doesn’t come on its own.Take notes on what makes our heart flutter, what makes you jump in excitement. How can you recreate that feeling?

Maybe it’s a movie character or a song, your favorite TedTalk, or an inspiring YouTuber. Or maybe it’s your favorite podcast launching every week. Of course, it can also be actions, like cleaning your house or working outside in a coffee shop.  Find what works for you and use it to your advantage.

BONUS TIP: The quick fix.

Are you just reading this post and procrastinating on something important? Not working out as you are supposed to? No motivation to work on your goal? I want you to do this:

Turn on your favourite upbeat music. Close your eyes. Breath in breath out. Start your task. Don’t give your brain enough time to think. Jump right into the task. Like jumping from the 5 meter.

Ultimate Health Goals Ideas List for Young Professionals -14 Goals that will change your life

Following health goals ideas can be a drastic game changer in your life. Especially if you haven’t been looking out for your health in a while.

Health based goals can start from having a set sleep circle, drinking less wine, or just integrating one more vegetable into your every day’s lunch. It is as simple as it sounds – but also as simple to leave out.

We all have days where we finish a stressful and exhausting day, carrying our tired body home just to drop onto the couch. Sometimes we heat up processed meals or eat junk food to at least get something into our bodies.

Our backs hurt from sitting in the wrong position all day and our eyes are itchy from the constant screen light. Being healthy really doesn’t come to our mind when we lay there all tired and ready to sleep. Tomorrow we say, tomorrow we cook a healthy meal or do a workout.

But health goals are essential for us to keep going. To keep your spine safe from long-term health issues, to not have bad eyesight by the time you turn 44. It helps us avoid stomach issues like constipation and bloating and keeps us flexible and moving. Health based goals can keep you mentally stable or help you battle obstacles that come your way in the future.

What are Health goals?

Health related goals are everything that belongs to the wellbeing of your body and soul. According to Sam Sander, health goals can start from general health conditions, like having a healthy family, to weight loss, healthy eating, fitness, and life balance. Those points I would categorize as physical health goals. Also included are mental health goals like destressing, being less overwhelmed, improving anxiety and depressions, etc.

How to Set Health Related Goals, Systems and Healthy Habits

Systems have a structure, they are a “process you follow” and, based on TNS, they give you the same result over and over again when you follow that process. If you set up a weight loss plan and you follow that plan repeatedly (assuming that the plan itself is reliable and you do not deviate from the plan) you will lose weight as long as you follow that plan.

Habits, on the other side, are actions you repeat. You can eat an apple every morning. Or drink 2 liters of water. But you do not plan a structure, a certain goal you want to achieve at the end of the action.

Building healthy habits and health systems into our lives can help us reach our goals and build a structure that won’t crumble after a short period of time. It will help us add actions that keep us moving and strong or in the opposite, help us avoid actions that drag us down.

So when planning your health based goals I want you to only concentrate on mental, and physical health goals. Building systems and healthy habits will come in chapter 3: Goal achievement.

How to set up Health Related Goals

There are in general two ways to collect health goals ideas:

  1. You concentrate on your bad health and find ideas and goals that can improve those areas (By daily stretching and exercising I get rid of my back pain within the next 6 months)
  2. You in general look for health related goals and integrate them into you life (unrelated to your current health level) (Junk food is proven to be unhealthy for me so I cut it out for the next 3 months)

(We are no health professionals. Get your health based goals approved by your doctor or health specialist before implementation)

Also, if you choose between self-based or general-based goals you can focus on the two health and wellness goals mentioned in the description.

The Importance of setting health goals

1. Physical Health Goals

Did you know that the most common (physical)  health concerns are obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, the flu, and mental illnesses  (Havard Health Publishing)?  42% of the world’s adults are either overweight or obese ( WHO). Close to 10 million people died of cancer in 2020 (WHO). 6%  of the world population suffers from type 2 diabetes (NCBI).

All those illnesses, as well as heart disease, or any disease caused by a weak immune system,  are influenced by your current lifestyle or the lifestyle you had in the past centuries.

drinkingwaterchallenge

Avoiding exercise or only having limited motion in your life increases the risk of heart diseases, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and cancer (CDC). Actually, people who exercise regularly have a 50% reduced risk of getting colon cancer and 40% reduced risk of getting breast cancer.

The antioxidants of a healthy balanced diet also support your immune systems and also help to prevent cancer cells in your body (helpguide)

Long Term Health Goals Ideas that keep you Physically Healthy

  • Not eating 4 hours before bed for the next 6 months (eating before bed can cause esophageal cancer, Lee Keller)
  • Visit the doctors once a year to get a throughout checkup ( yes, this includes the dentist)
  • Improving the doctors results to “healthy”  within the next 5 years  (this includes losing weight when it causes health problems as well as integrating vitamins and minerals if you are lacking – unrelated to your size. Please ask your doctor on how you can achieve better results)
  • Getting rid of back pain within the next 12 months by exercising and stretching regularly
  • Changing your sleep rhythm to 10pm to 6am until the summer workshop starts (based on your daily schedule and individually set deadline)
  • Running the Sparta Obstacle Run on the “exact date”. (Get an exact date and register for a sports event right now!)
  • Lose or gain 10kg until your next holiday (if you are severely under or overweight)

2. Mental Health Goals

According to The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion,13% of the world’s population have mental illnesses. Many of those cases are depression, anxiety, and panic disorder (NICE).

It is certain that those suffering from a mental disease need therapy or medication (or at least a professional looking out for them regularly). Yet, in some cases exercises can ease symptoms of depression (Harvard Health Publishing).

But integrating health based goals into our lives, we also can focus on easing more day-to-day mental barriers such as feeling overwhelmed, sad, stressed, or lonely. Did you know that feeling immense loneliness can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day (Scientific American).?

Loneliness can and will shorten your life if left unchanged.Thats why it is important to take your mental health issues as serious as your physical ones.

Long Term Health Goals Ideas to keep your Mental Health in check

  • Create monthly events with your colleagues to strengthen the work atmosphere.
  • Have a talk with your boss or doctor within the next 7 days if you feel burned out or overwhelmed
  • Accomplish 5 actions that fight your anxiety (do one task you pushed away way too often in work, give a presentation, do something wrong, start a conversation with your colleague, drive to work)
  • Go on a single trip to somewhere you can completely shut off and destress for your next summer holiday (be specific where you want to go and when)
  • Volunteer every Saturday in an old people’s home or food shelter. (Again be as specific: where exactly do you go?)
  • Do 10 Comfort Crusher Challenges to battle Social Fear (talk to a stranger in a coffeeshop, lay down in the middle of a public spot, etc.)
  • Take one day a week off to spend time with yourself only (selfcare, crafting, day trip etc) no calls allowed.

Don’t be scared to aim too high. It will come to you slowly and steadily.

If you haven’t run for the past 20 years then you most likely can’t run 10k within the next week. But you for sure can get better and reach your goal within the next 9 months. As long as you don’t give up a lot of things are possible. So don’t hold back when defining your goals.

This is it for today’s post. Once you reach unit 3 you will learn more about how you can set effective actions for your goals. For now, I leave you with the task to set your own health, wellness, and fitness goals and hope we see each other in the next lesson.

Family Goals to improve relationships and share love

Did you know that the 15th of May is the international family day? Even though spring still won’t be around the corner for another while, today’s post will prepare you to set effective family goals . Family goal setting, thereby, can strengthen your relationship with your family or resolve disagreements/ revive old relationships with family members. And who knows – maybe until next May your family relationships are on a whole different level.

Family Goals Meaning and Definition

Family based goals are goals you set as an individual or between family members to accomplish common goals. Family goals have the benefit of strengthening relationships and building trust and understanding between each family member.

Types of Family Goals:

When you set family goals there are a lot of factors that influence your choice of aim. Setting goals for a young family with two young children might be different than planning relationship goals just between you and your husband/wife.

Time and location also play an important role when writing down bullet points. Do you plan five years ahead? Or do you want to settle some short-term issues instead? Do you have goals for your home? Or planning special goals while going on a vacation?

Going through your family oriented goals takes time and care. Just like any other goal, they should be smart and achievable.

Family Goals Examples

The following list should give you some insights on how you can plan your family goals. But keep in mind that they should be as unique as your family is. Copying from someone else doesn’t work. Family Goal Tools:

There are many different ways and tools you can use to note down and visualize your family goals.

Family goal Checklist

The first, and most common way is to make a checklist. You can just scribble down some subheadings and fill them with content afterward, keeping it clean and organized on a piece of paper. Yet, it would make more sense to have a brainstorm paper first, messy but with everything that comes to your mind.

Family Goals Mindmap:

Another way to collect your family goals is a mindmap. It is just like a checklist but a lot more structured and organized. If you note down in a certain color who is responsible for which task (eg. Aunt Mary invites me to dinner every saturday, Karin watches her niece every sunday etc.) it is a lot more visible and defined than the checklist and you have all important facts well sorted by color.

Family Goal Template Notion

Another great way to set up your family-oriented goals is Notion. How exactly you set up a template or sheet for goal setting is shown here (the post will be uploaded soon 🙂 please be patient)

Family Goals Vision Board

Last but not least is a vision board. Many great YouTubers show their vision boards proudly on their videos. And it’s true – vision boards are a nice and visual way to remind yourself of your goals but also highlight them with nice and relevant pictures. Plus, you spend a lot more time and thought on the board (and crafting it is fun!) You can read more about vision boards here.

Most goals are individual, but family goals are hard to meet if you only consider your side. If you want to improve your relationship with family members you need to sit down and have a talk about what both sides expect. Just this way you can guarantee that your actions move your relationship in the right direction. This also includes your children. Be open, let them say their opinion too. Always have pure communication and avoid breaking trust by lying. I already mentioned it before but take your time when writing down family goals and include everyone in the process. How you write it down is based on your own wishes, yet, the more time you spend the better.

Feel free to add more family goals in the comments and share them with the rest of the community <3

Why you Should Set Goals – 5 Captivating Reasons

“I’ve failed again to achieve my set goals this year” – Laura Laurell sights. “You aren’t the only one! Did you know that around 80% never achieve their new years resolutions!” – Her friend exclaims. “Maybe we should just stop setting goals?”

Have you ever asked yourself, whether goal setting even makes sense? Today we will dive into the importance of goals in life, goal benefits, and the value of setting goals. Before we go deeper into how to successfully set goals and achieve them in the next lessons.

New Here? Start at Unit 1 disover yourself and learn to answer the question “Who am I?”

Goals give you a Solid Direction

Goals help you get unstuck. They give you a clear direction. Imagine going on a trip without a goal . It might be the most amazing trip ever. Or it might be an amazingly bad trip with you going to dull and boring places or around circles.  And then you wonder why you feel stuck.

Goals act like a lighthouse, showing you the path during stormy days, during sunny days, and even during flooding. Once you’ve picked a goal and you know where you want to go making decisions will become much easier.

You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. – Zig Ziglar

Goals give you some Fierce Motivation

Picking your personal goal gives you a start and a finish line. It will give you drive and motivation.

Motivation comes from moving. When you move towards a goal, you’ll get excited. And when you are excited, tasks become a lot easier to achieve.

Set Your Goals with the Goal Settin Workbook :

Measure your Progress with the Right Goals

How often do you check in, if your life is what you want it to be like? Are you on the right track or have you been led off your right path? Are you happy or unhappy?

Are you spending your time on experiences and tasks that matter? Or are you wasting away?

Goals are an amazing tool to track how far along your journey you’ve come. Whether the daily habits, routines, and tasks are actually moving you forward or not.

Goals are a benchmark easily tracked.

And since you always know where exactly you are and where exactly you want to go, goals also help you overcome procrastination.

Lead a more Active Life and Create Breathtaking Experiences through goal setting

How often do you get outside of your comfort zone? How often do you try something new?
When you have a goal it will force you to do things that you’ve never done before. It will bring you to places you never thought you could go to and it lets you meet people you never would have met otherwise.

Without a goal we stay in a daily rut. Following our daily routines all over again.

While goals give you the chance to lead an extraordinary life.

Break out of your comfort zone.

Breath in fresh and exciting ideas.

And dare dream about places and experiences others are too scared to dream of.

This way goals also help you challenge yourself and to grow as a person.

Find your Purpose with goal setting

While the goal in and by itself might not be enough to find your purpose I am a firm believer that working towards your goals will show you exactly what you want and what you want to do with your life.

The more experiences the clearer it will become.

Therefore, goal setting is a great tool to find your personal purpose.

To Sum it Up

Goal setting:

  • gives you a clear direction to focus on.
  • helps you stay motivated.
  • helps you measure your progress.
  • you’ll grow as a person and lead a more active life.
  • you’ll make incredible experiences.
  • and you can find your purpose.

I hope we were able to show you the importance of goal setting. Of course, there are other benefits to goal setting as well. To wrap it up, one can say that goal setting has a multitude of benefits.

We can only recommend you to stay tuned for the coming lessons on how to set your goals and how to achieve them.
